Morgan State University offers an excellent educational program in entrepreneurship for undergraduate students. We are in the process of developing further offerings at the undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. level. We encourage you to visit this site periodically to see any changes.

The Earl G. Graves School of Business offers the following classes for students:

Business Administration (BUAD) 351: Entrepreneurship
This course focuses on creating, owning, and operating a new venture. The course discusses such issues as opportunity recognition, resource acquisition, and solving challenging strategic issues in new venture startups. The course is multidisciplinary and requires students to examine these issues from various perspectives (e.g., marketing, human resource management, leadership, finance, customer service, production, etc.).

BUAD 382: Business Law
This course examines the basic concepts in determining the various types of business organizations; emphasis is placed on partnerships and corporations. Students are introduced to the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) treatment of sales, security transactions, and negotiable instruments. Bankruptcy and legal liabilities are also covered.

BUAD 452: Advanced Entrepreneurship
This course extends the education provided in BUAD 351. The major course project is a business plan. Students learn how to conduct and present market research to support a business opportunity, prepare financial projections, choose a legal form of organization, and explicitly develop a business strategy.

BUAD 453: Entrepreneurs-in-Residence
This course involves a series of 10 once-a-week programs about starting and growing a business offered by real-life business owners. In each program, at least one business owner will share with students how they do what they do and how they: got the original idea for thei business; raised money to start; hire people; deliver services; develop products; manage the systems of the business, etc. This course is only available to students whose business plans in BUAD 452 were evaluated, selected, and recommended. In BUAD 453, students further refine their plans for review and critique by the E-I-R participants.

BUAD 4XX: Entrepreneurial Opportunity Recognition
This is a new course that will be offered soon. This course will examine the opportunity recogntion process. Discussion of psychological, demographic, economic, social network, marketing, and finance factors will help students better understand how to take an initial new venture concept or idea and turn it into an entrepreneurial opportunity. Students will develop networking and presentation skills, as well as refine their ability to conduct maraket research and prepare pro forma finacial statements.

BUAD 4XX: Small Business Consulting
This is a new course that will be offered soon. Teams of students will consult with local small businesses recommended by the Small Business Development Center. Students work on problems in such areas as accounting, production, marketing, personnel, finance, insurance, business law, and information systems.

BUAD 4XX: Managing the Venture Financing Process
This is a new course that will be offered soon. This course will examine the venture financing options available for new business startups. Emphasis will be placed on creating and analyzing financial documents, approaching financial sources, selling stock for growing companies, and managing the financial condition of a new venture.


For Morgan State University students who are not in the Graves School of Business, we offer a minor in entrepreneurship. To complete the minor, students must successfully complete BUAD 351, BUAD 452 and the two following classes:

BUAD 200: Introduction to Business for Non-Business Majors
The course is designed to assist students in exploring the field of business as a career. Topics such as entrepreneurship and its challenges, global business, forms of business ownership, financing, and marketing are discussed at their most basic levels. It should be noted that this course does NOT count toward degree requirements in the School of Business and Management.

BUAD 456: Special Topics in Business Administration
This course investigates selected topics of significance to entrepreneurship, business, and management. The precise focus varies by semester. Emphasis is placed on developing entrepreneurial, analytical, and problem-solving skills of students as applied to current business issues.
